Searching Rock County Civil Dockets
The official starting point is the Wisconsin Circuit Court Access portal. WCCA holds public circuit-case information for the whole state. Pick Rock County. Then search a full party name, a business name, or a known case number. Partial names work too. Enter at least three consecutive letters plus an asterisk. Business searches likewise start with three or more characters.
WCCA is not the only route. The courthouse offers terminal access for anyone without internet service. Amanda Nelson, Clerk of Circuit Court, runs a public counter and a general phone line. Record requests can arrive by email, phone, fax, or mail. Include your own name and phone number in any request. The case number, caption, document name, date range, and copy type help the staff fill it faster.
- Choose Rock County on the WCCA search form.
- Search by party, business, or year/type/sequence case number.
- Match the caption, county, case type, and party role.
- Read the public case history and latest setting labels.
- Contact the Clerk for filed documents, inspection, or certification.
Rock County Business Name Searches
A Rock County civil docket can involve a company. In that case, a business-name search often beats a personal-name one. Type the first three or more characters if the full legal name is unclear. Then check each candidate against its caption and case classification. Look-alike business names still produce false matches.
| Search route | Best input | Cross-check |
|---|---|---|
| Party name | Complete last and first name | Party role and Rock County |
| Business | Full name or three-plus characters | Exact caption and case type |
| Case number | Year, type, sequence | County and displayed label |
| Clerk request | Case and document details | Release status and cost |
A complaint or petition on file proves nothing about liability. It only records a claim or request. A judgment or final order is a separate entry, and the underlying document may be needed to see what the court decided.
Inside a Rock County Civil Docket
A public Rock County civil docket can show the case, the parties and their roles, dated events, and hearing settings. It can also show status and disposition. On WCCA the event list is called the case history. That history orients you to the file. It does not replace the pleadings, exhibits, orders, or certified judgment held by the Clerk.
| Case number | The court identifier built from year, case type, and sequence. |
|---|---|
| Caption | The case title and public party presentation. |
| Party role | Plaintiff, defendant, petitioner, respondent, or another listed role. |
| Case history | Dated filings, notices, hearings, orders, judgments, or administrative events. |
| Status | The current portal status, subject to later processing or change. |
| Disposition | A recorded outcome category that needs its specific entry for context. |
Public users cannot view eFiled documents online through WCCA, according to the state's eFiling FAQ. To read the documents themselves, inspect or request them through the clerk's office. A portal screen is not a certified copy.
Rock County Civil Docket Counts
The official 2024 Rock County caseload report splits ordinary civil matters from divorce, paternity, other family, and small claims, contested or not. It lists 169 civil matters opened and 392 disposed. Divorce shows 100 opened and 168 disposed. Contested small claims came in at 22 opened and 85 disposed, while uncontested small claims reached 135 openings and 945 dispositions.
These numbers measure court workload, not the merits of any civil docket. Opened, reopened, transferred, disposed, and prior pending matters all shape the report. A separate 2023 family report used a different year and category scope. Its 1,067 opened and 1,193 disposed total therefore cannot be added to the 2024 table.
Civil Case Types on the Docket
Rock County Circuit Court hears several noncriminal case groups, and each carries different records and access rules. In a state statistics table, "civil" does not cover every noncriminal action. Check the displayed case type before assuming the office route or public scope.
| Group | Starting route | Access point |
|---|---|---|
| Ordinary civil | WCCA party, business, or number search | Clerk for public documents |
| Small claims | WCCA and circuit clerk | Small-claims routing through the clerk |
| Family | WCCA when public | Specialized staff and access rules |
| Probate | Clerk or Register in Probate | Confirm what is public |
| Juvenile | Specialized juvenile staff | Strict access limits |
A municipal forfeiture is not a Rock County small claim. Municipal courts keep their own ordinance and local traffic dockets. Follow the issuing court named on the citation instead of forcing it into a circuit civil search.
Rock County Claims Versus Judgments
One reading rule does most of the work: a filing is not proof of liability. A plaintiff starts a civil action and a defendant responds; a petitioner asks for an order and a respondent answers. Those labels are roles, not findings.
- Motion
- A request for a court ruling or order.
- Order
- A court directive or ruling.
- Judgment
- A formal result, including a money determination when applicable.
- Disposition
- The recorded outcome category, which must be read with the actual entry.
- Pending
- A case still active in the relevant status view.
Case history may also hold notices, dismissals, settlement-related events, or administrative actions. Read the sequence, and when a short event label cannot answer the question, request the relevant filing itself.
Civil Docket Settings and Hearings
A Rock County civil docket can list motion hearings, status conferences, and pretrial conferences. Trials and other settings appear there too. A setting only means an event was scheduled, not that it happened. Later history may show a continuance, reset, cancellation, or new notice. The newest official notice, plus confirmation from the branch or Clerk, controls.
All seven branches share the Janesville courthouse. Courtroom assignment is not the same thing as case type. Read the branch, judge, courtroom, floor, event label, date, and time together. When a setting looks stale, call the branch or Clerk rather than trusting an old portal view. The Rock County court dates page walks through the full calendar-check process.
Rock County Limited Civil Records
Some civil files carry extra protection. Family, probate, guardianship, commitment, and juvenile matters can all hold restricted details, and a public WCCA hit never guarantees that every page inside the clerk's file may be viewed. Ask the responsible office directly what can be inspected or copied, and keep protected identifiers and anything about minors out of print.
A public index entry with no filing behind it deserves a call to the Clerk. When nothing comes back at all, check the name spelling and the county, try the case number, and ask whether the case moves through a specialized route. An empty search result is not proof that a filing never existed.
Civil Docket Access Rules
Wisconsin law draws three separate lines here. Redaction blacks out protected details but leaves the rest of a filing public, confidentiality bars access by law or rule, and sealing closes the record under whatever authority applies. The rules for protected information, confidential information, and motions to seal sit in Wis. Stat. ยงยง 801.19 to 801.21.
Public does not mean online. WCCA offers public case information, while public eFiled documents generally require clerk-office access. Supreme Court Rule Chapter 72 also governs record integrity, retention, access, and treatment of sealed or expunged material.
Record requests reach the Clerk by email, phone, fax, mail, or a walk-in visit. Circuit copies cost $1.25 per page. Certification adds $5 per document, and a search of files stored off-site also runs $5. The county publishes no uniform turnaround time. So confirm the release status, the total cost, and how delivery will happen before you count on any estimate.
Rock County Civil Search Form
The official WCCA search interface lets you look up civil matters. Search by party, business, or case number. Even so, each result still needs a Rock County and case-type check. Business-name searching works well for entity captions. The portal help allows a partial business name. It must start with at least three characters. A known case number remains the surest way to pull one civil file out of the crowd.
